Cutting Chipboard & Cardstock

Learn how to measure and cut accurate, square chipboard and cardstock pieces for cartonnage projects.

What you'll learn

Learn how to cut clean, square chipboard and cardstock pieces using the right blade and cutting technique for each material.

Step 1

Measure and Mark

Transfer the measurements from the project cut list to the chipboard or cardstock.

Keep marks light and accurate, and verify the dimensions before cutting.

Step 2

Position the Ruler

Align a metal ruler with the measurement marks and place it over the piece you want to keep.

Hold the ruler securely so it does not shift during cutting. A ruler with a finger shield provides extra protection and control.

Step 3

Cut the Chipboard

Cut chipboard with a sharp utility knife held upright against the ruler.

Start with a light scoring pass, then repeat along the same cut line until the blade passes cleanly through the full thickness. Cutting in several controlled passes produces a straighter edge than forcing the blade through at once.

Replace the blade when it begins to drag, compress the edge, or require more pressure.

Step 4

Cut the Cardstock

Cut cardstock with a sharp craft knife and metal ruler.

One or two controlled passes are usually enough. Keep the blade upright to create a clean edge and avoid cutting into the finished piece.

Step 5

Check and Label the Pieces

Confirm the dimensions after cutting and check that the corners are square. View chipboard edges from the side to make sure they are straight rather than beveled.

Label each piece according to the pattern or cut list, then keep related pieces grouped together until assembly.
