Wrapping Flat Panels

Learn how to cover flat cardstock or chipboard panels neatly with fabric.

What you'll learn

Learn how to attach a flat panel to fabric, trim the corners, wrap the edges neatly, and dry the finished panel without warping.

Step 1

Glue the Board to the Fabric

Place the fabric wrong side up and confirm its direction before applying glue.

Spread a thin, even coat of glue across one face of the cardstock or chipboard. Position the glued side on the fabric, leaving the allowance listed in the pattern around every edge.

Turn the piece over and smooth the fabric from the center toward the edges to remove wrinkles and air pockets.

Step 2

Clip the Corners

Turn the panel so the fabric side faces down.

Cut diagonally across each fabric corner, leaving a small amount of fabric beyond the corner of the board. This remaining fabric covers the board when the edges are folded.

Do not cut directly against the board. The amount left should be close to the thickness of the panel.

Step 3

Wrap the First Two Sides

Begin with two opposite sides.

Apply glue to the first fabric allowance, then fold it firmly over the edge and onto the back of the panel. Smooth the fabric from the center toward the corners.

Repeat on the opposite side, keeping the fabric straight and the tension even.

Step 4

Finish the Remaining Sides

Before folding the remaining sides, tuck the small points of fabric at each corner against the edge of the board. This keeps the board covered and helps create clean corners.

Apply glue to the remaining fabric allowances, then fold them over the edges and onto the back.

Smooth the fabric flat and check that all four corners are fully covered without excess bulk.

Step 5

Dry Under Weight

Place the wrapped panel between clean sheets of protective paper.

Set a flat board over the panel and add evenly distributed weight. Make sure the panel remains flat and that no wet glue can transfer onto the visible fabric.

Allow the panel to dry completely before installing it in the project.
