Cutting Fabric
Learn how to plan fabric direction and cut accurate fabric pieces using the dimensions in a project pattern.
What you'll learn
Learn how to plan fabric direction, use the cutting dimensions in a project pattern, cut accurate fabric pieces, and keep matching materials organized.
Step 1
Determine the Fabric Direction
Before cutting the fabric, decide which direction is up and how the print should appear on the finished project.
Check for directional motifs, stripes, or other details that need to face a particular way. Mark the top on the wrong side of the fabric when needed.
Step 2
Mark the Cutting Lines
Use the dimensions in the project pattern to measure and mark the fabric cutting lines. Keep the matching chipboard or cardstock piece in the correct orientation as you work.
Check the direction and placement of the print one more time before making the final cuts.
Step 3
Cut and Organize the Fabric
Cut the fabric with sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. Keep the fabric flat and avoid pulling or stretching it while you cut. Use a quilting ruler with a rotary cutter when you need a long, straight edge.
After cutting, place each fabric piece with the chipboard or cardstock piece it will cover. Keep matching sets together in labeled groups until they are ready to be wrapped.
