Reinforcing with Water-Activated Tape

Learn how to cut, activate, apply, and smooth water-activated tape so it reinforces a chipboard structure without pulling it out of alignment.

Step 1

Cut the Tape

Measure the joint you need to reinforce and cut the tape to the correct length.

The tape should cover the full seam without extending unnecessarily beyond it. Prepare all of the required strips before activating the adhesive.

Step 2

Activate the Adhesive

Lightly dampen the adhesive side of the tape with a wet sponge, brush, or other controlled source of water.

Use only enough water to activate the adhesive. The tape should feel tacky but should not be soaked, dripping, or beginning to dissolve.

Step 3

Apply the Tape

Center the tape over the joint so it covers both adjoining chipboard surfaces evenly.

For a corner, press the tape into the seam first, then smooth it outward onto both sides. Keep the walls in their correct position while the tape is applied.

Step 4

Smooth the Tape

Press the tape firmly into place with a bone folder, smoothing tool, or clean finger.

Work from the center of the seam toward the edges to remove air bubbles and flatten the tape. Be gentle because the damp tape can tear or stretch.

Check that all edges are fully attached.

Step 5

Let It Dry

Check that the structure is still square and that the tape has not pulled any walls out of position.
