Installing Lining Panels to Containers
Learn how to fit and install fabric-covered lining panels neatly inside a cartonnage project.
What you'll learn
Learn how to test-fit lining panels, make small adjustments, install them in the correct order, and create clean seams between adjoining pieces.
Step 1
Test-Fit Each Panel
Place each covered lining panel in its intended position before applying glue.
Check that the panel is facing the correct direction and fits within the available space without bending, bowing, or forcing the structure outward.
Test all of the panels together so you can see how their edges will meet.
Step 2
Adjust the Fit if Needed
Remove any panel that is too tight and make a small adjustment before installing it.
Trim the cardstock carefully from an edge that will be hidden whenever possible. Avoid cutting through the finished fabric edge.
The panel should fit closely without needing to be forced into place. A small, even gap is better than a panel that bows or overlaps another piece.
Photo comparing a panel that fits flat with one that bows because it is too large coming soon.
Step 3
Install in the Correct Order
Follow the installation order listed in the project recipe.
For many open trays and boxes, the bottom panel is installed first. Two opposite side panels are added next, followed by the remaining side panels so their edges cover the first pair.
The correct order may vary by project, so check the recipe before applying glue.
Step 4
Press Each Panel into Place
Apply a thin, even coat of glue to the back of the panel or to the surface where it will be installed.
Position the panel carefully, then press from the center toward the edges. Use clean fingers, a smoothing tool, or a protected pressing block to make sure the entire panel is attached.
Avoid sliding the panel once it touches the glue.
Step 5
Check the Seams
Inspect the edges where the lining panels meet.
The seams should be straight and close together without overlapping, bowing, or leaving large gaps. Check that the top edges are level and that no chipboard or raw fabric is visible.
Press down any lifted edges and clean away excess glue before the panels dry.
