Wrapping the Inside of a Frame

Learn how to cut and wrap fabric neatly around the inside opening of a chipboard or cardstock frame.

What you'll learn

Learn how to cover a frame with fabric, open the center, clip the inside corners, and wrap the fabric neatly around the inner edges.

Step 1

Cover the Frame

Place the fabric wrong side up and position the frame according to the project pattern.

Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the front of the frame, then place it on the fabric. Smooth the fabric from the center toward the edges to remove wrinkles and air pockets.

Step 2

Open the Center and Clip the Inside Corners

Turn the covered frame fabric side down so the center opening is visible.

Use the dimensions in the project pattern to mark the fabric allowance inside the opening. Cut away the center fabric while keeping the required allowance attached to the frame.

At each inside corner, cut diagonally toward the corner of the frame.

Stop just before the chipboard or cardstock so the fabric can open and fold without exposing the corner. Make small additional cuts only when needed to help the fabric lie flat.

Step 3

Wrap the Inner Edges

Apply a thin layer of glue to one fabric allowance and the inner edge it will cover.

Fold the fabric through the opening and smooth it onto the back of the frame. Press along the inner edge with a bone folder to create a clean fold. Continue around the opening in the order shown in the project pattern.

Step 4

Check the Finished Opening

Inspect the opening before the glue dries.

Make sure every inner edge is smooth and fully attached. Check that the corners are covered, the opening remains square, and no fabric extends into the visible opening.

Press down any lifted areas and remove excess glue.
