Cutting Circles

Trace the circle or oval onto the chipboard from the pattern template.

Place the chipboard on a cutting mat. Starting at the edge of the board, make short, controlled cuts toward and around the traced line. Work in several light passes instead of trying to cut through the chipboard at once. Rotate the board as you work so the knife stays in a comfortable, controlled position.

Finish the cut all the way around the shape and lift it free.

Note: When you can see the shape emerging on the bottom side of the chipboard, turn the board over and cut from the bottom to release the shape.

Use a fine sanding file to smooth bumps and flatten any high spots around the cut edge. Work gradually around the entire shape, checking the curve often so you do not create a flat spot.

Stop when the edge feels even and follows the traced shape.

A circular cutting tool can be used for true circles when its size range fits the pattern piece. Mark the center of the circle, set the cutter to the required radius, and secure the chipboard on a cutting mat.

Make several light rotations rather than forcing the blade through in one pass. This tool makes circles only; use the craft-knife method for ovals.
