Installing Hidden Magnets
Learn how to recess and secure magnetic hardware for a clean closure without visible hardware.
Materials and Tools
- Internal hidden magnets:
- Metal discs: Choose discs slightly larger than the magnets so the magnets have more room to find the connection.
- Glue: Use this if the metal discs are not self-adhesive.
Step 1
Choose the Hardware
Choose a magnet and metal disc that are appropriately sized for your project. The metal disc should be slightly larger than the magnet so the magnet has more room to find the connection.
Step 2
Test the Closure Strength
Before cutting any holes, determine what will sit between the magnet and metal disc when the project is finished. This may include fabric, cardstock, lining panels, or padding.
Place those materials between the magnet and metal disc and test the connection.
The closure should feel comfortably stronger than you need at this stage. If the connection already feels weak, use two magnets instead of a magnet and metal disc.
When using two magnets, check their polarity before continuing and make sure the attracting sides will face each other when the project is closed.
Step 3
Mark the Placement
Identify the two chipboard pieces that will meet when the closure is closed.
Position the magnet and metal disc, or the two magnets, where you want the closure and trace around them.
Before cutting, bring the pieces into their finished position and double-check that the marked locations align.
Step 4
Recess the Metal Disc
Carefully cut away a shallow layer of chipboard inside the traced circle.
The recess should be just deep enough for the metal disc to sit flush with the surface. Run your finger across it to check. You should not be able to feel the edge of the disc.
If the disc has an adhesive backing, peel it off and press the disc into the recess. Otherwise, secure it with a small amount of glue.
Step 5
Recess the Magnet
Cut a deeper hole for the magnet. Depending on the thickness of the magnet and chipboard, this may go all the way through the chipboard.
The magnet should sit flush with, or slightly below, the surface.
If the opening goes completely through the chipboard, cover the back of the hole with a piece of water-activated tape before inserting the magnet. This creates a backing to support it.
Place the magnet into the opening.
Step 6
Test Before Securing
Bring the pieces together again and confirm:
- The hardware aligns correctly.
- The closure connects in the right position.
- The magnetic strength still feels appropriate.
Make any adjustments now, before covering the hardware with tape.
Step 7
Secure the Hardware
Once everything is working as expected, cover the magnet and metal disc with water-activated tape.
Smooth the tape firmly over the surrounding chipboard to hold the hardware securely in place and create an even surface for covering.
